Prof Jumana Al-Aama is a Clinical Geneticist and Professor of Genetic Medicine at King Abulaziz University(KAU), Jeddah. She trained in the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario at the University of Ottawa and was certified by the Canadian College of Medical Genetics in 2004. On her return to KSA she established the clinical genetic service at KAUH and was appointed as the first woman to chair an academic department in a Saudi university when she established the Department of Genetic Medicine at the Faculty of Medicine in 2009. Under the leadership of Prof. Al-Aama the department master programs in both molecular genetics and genetic counselling and won several awards including best curriculum at KAU Medical school, best creativity in the field of Scientific Publishing and best department in social services. The clinical services she established include the genetic clinics and the Down syndrome clinics in addition to the prenatal assessment of fetuses affected with genetic syndromes and congenital malformations.
In 2008, Prof Al-Aama set up the Princess Aljawhara Center of Excellence in Research of Hereditary Disorders and in 2015, the center was nominated as best Research center at KAU among more than 10 other research centers. Prof Al-Aama served as the Founding Specialty Chief Editor for Genetic Disorders in the International Scientific Journal Frontiers in Genetics based in Geneva from 2012 to 2017. By that time, the journal developed an Impact Factor of 3.7. Prof Al-Aama is also an academic editor for PLOS1 since 2015 and is an editorial board member of the KAU Medical Journal. In addition, she has acted as a reviewer for several local funding agencies, academic staff promotions and postgraduate program proposals. She has more than 100 publications in ISI high impact factor journals, with over 6000 citations. She has presented her research findings in several talks locally and internationally in many places including Chicago, Paris, Spain, China, Malaysia, Jordan, Dubai, Bahrain and Al-Ain in addition to scientific presentations in various cities of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. She has organized 5 International conferences and several workshops and courses. She was appointed as part time visiting professor at the Beijing Genomic Institute (BGI), China for the period 2012-2014 and as a member of the Board of Directors at Aljawhara Research Center at the Gulf University in Bahrain 2010-2016.
Prof. Al-Aama has an H-index of 30 and an i-index of 62 and has won several research awards including the award for Best Researcher for Health Specialties in King Abdulaziz University in both 2018 and 2020. Over the years, she has secured funding for 14 science projects.
Prof. Al-Aama has a passion for social services and advocacy. This includes spreading awareness about genetic disorders to educate the public and families through different awareness campaigns including the annual Down Syndrome Meeting. She supervises the student group called Health Awareness Club (HAC). Prof Al-Aama is happily married with 4 children.
